Yesterday marked my first day with my new contact lenses. Though I have a sort of “I can see everything now and can’t handle it” headache, and despite a rather long spell of blurry vision during yesterday’s webcast, I am thrilled. Apparently, I’ve had somewhat blurry vision for the past 12 years of my life (that’s how long its been since I’ve been to the eye doc) and didn’t really know just how bad it had gotten. I’m seeing perfectly street signs four blocks away, band names on cd cases in the living room, even little baby zits on my buddy’s forehead.
Yesterday also marked the beginning of month 5 of the project, or in other words, I’m 1/3 the way home. The toughest thing lately hasn’t been the writing or the recording but instead recalling the words to these new songs when I play them at shows. It’s getting to be an every gig occasion now where you’ll either find me jibberishing entire verses or stopping songs in the middle for a minute to remember where to go next. Its funny, ‘cause I was a little concerned with overwhelming you guys with too much music and yet not only haven’t I heard any complaints about that from anyone but, as it turns out, I’m the one who’s overwhelmed. On the writing front, I’ve begun co-writing with a few people for music I simply haven’t been able to come up with lyrics for. I knew I’d hit this snag at some point, and I’m certainly not panicked about it. I just don’t want to put out something I dug a little too hard to come up with.
Mother’s Day is this Sunday and I think I’ve got a good song for the occasion to release on Monday. Putting the finishing touches on it this week. Hope you’re into Ride The Brake. Keep sending me suggestions/questions, I really like hearing what you have to say. |

So yesterday was my first day with a baseball team I joined for the summer. A buddy of mine from childhood asked if I’d join him on the team a few weeks ago and I jumped at the chance to play again. Baseball is my first love, and I wish I had kept up with it the past few years, but for one reason or another that didn’t happen. And now, I’m unearthing the old mitt and cleats and giving it a shot. We are called the Cyclones and we play 25 games or so over the next four months.
I arrived in Central Park this morning for our scrimmage in uniform and ready to rock. We have 18 guys on the team and since it was a practice game we all got to play a few innings. My first and only time at the plate I hit a ball that eeked past the pitcher and I beat it out for an infield hit – quite a feat for someone not too fleet of foot. Say that ten times fast.
Then I went out to right field in hopes of catching a few fly outs. Instead, I chased after a blooper that barely reached the outfield, slipped and fell on my ass, tried to get up to throw towards home plate, slipped again, and threw a fastball almost straight into the ground. It was literally a twenty foot throw, and not only did I not get the guy out, but I managed to smack our second baseman, who was looking at home plate for a throw that never got there, in the calf.
“Oh, shit!” he exclaimed.
“Oh, shit!” I responded.
My brother and his wife, there at the game to heckle me, were in tears laughing. Thanks for your support guys.
All in all an odd first day back in the office, but I should’ve expected to embarrass myself at least once. Next week in our first official game and I will play like a champion. |
